Blue Ridge QHA News
On February 26, the Blue Ridge Quarter Horse Youth Association announced Jamie Farren as the winner of the 2004 Sportsmanship Award. The award was presented at the annual banquet in Bristol, Virginia. Jamie is a sophomore at Liberty High School in Bedford, Virginia and is employed part time at Tractor Supply Company. She is the daughter of Rachel and Mike Short and Jeff and Lynn Farren. In 2000, Jamie made the BRQHA Congress Youth Team for the first time with her barrel horse Florida Joe Jack. She presently owns: Peppy Te Leo, a barrel horse; Chocs Ben Clever, a western pleasure horse; and Joe’s Pretty Boy, a western pleasure and all-around horse. Two of her horses have been named AQHA’s School Horse of the Year. During the summer, Jamie will assist Veterinarian Suzanne Shalet. Her future plans are to keep good grades throughout the remainder of high school and attend either Virginia Tech to become a Veterinarian or to attend University of Findlay to become a horse trainer. Jamie has a variety of animals other than horses. She has chickens, an iguana, five cats, two 55 gallon aquariums, a ferret, three parrots, and her family raises Australian Shepherds. When Jamie is not riding, working, or taking care of her animals she enjoys target shooting her bow or 22 and riding four wheelers.
Congratulations to Sue Atkinson on receiving the BRQHA 2002 Lifetime Achievement Award. Sue was one of the founders of BRQHA in the early 1980's. She has served in many capacities including President for many years and in the last several years as Director At Large. Sue's service and contribution to the BRQHA over the years has helped our association grow into what it is today. The membership wishes to thank Sue for all she has done to promote, enhance and insure the future of the Blue Ridge Quarter Horse Association
